mythbuntu 8.04 beta installer exits silently after partial installation

Bug Description

Just tried the new mythbuntu 8.04 beta installer and found a regression. From the initial boot menu, I selected the install option in safe graphics mode, answered all the configuration questions (main BE/FE) and confirmed the config. The "Installing System" thermometer came up, and it got about 2/3 of the way through and silently dumped me to the desktop.

After this, I tried double clicking the "install mythbuntu" icon and went through the same configuration and confirmed again. This time it got through >95% before stopping (past the grub setup) before quitting, but didn't pop up the "Configure guide data/backend" screen. I tried booting into the installed system and it came up, but wouldn't start gdm, just got the console login on virtual terminal 1.

Mythbuntu alpha 4 does install OK on this machine (except that sound doesn't work). It's an Athlon 64 (using the AMD64 build) with 1Gig of memory and an NVidia 5200 graphics card (and I did set up the proprietary driver in my configuration).

I'm happy to give more information or try again if this helps.

We found the error here. It was from VNC mis configuring. It's fixed in trunk, if you want a full install, don't choose VNC during install.

Thanks for the quick feedback, Mario. Turns out, VNC wasn't the problem. It
was caused by selecting to install remote control support, selecting
"custom", and not filling in the two config text boxes. I tried a fresh beta
install without enabling remote control support, and it installed just fine.

Peter thanks for following up.

I'll get a fix in place to prevent it from letting you do that.

I have also had this problem.

After booting the CD to the desktop I double click on the Install icon. It displays progress until it displays 83% ("Configuring Myth TV") and then quietly disappears without reporting any problem. If I restart the system it then doesn't boot Mythbuntu (grub reports an error - I can't remember the code number.)

I was not specifying any remote control. Taking notice of what I read here, I specified a remote control in the installation dialogue but the result was the same.

This bug should be fixed in the final release. Are you using the final
release?

I downloaded what was described as the "final release" CD image, burned it to CD and used that CD.

The original poster described the installer's silent exit as occurring after the installer reported 95% completion. The last report I saw from the installer was 83% complete. I don't know how the completion figure is calculated - perhaps it gives a clue as to what the installer was doing at the time and that might suggest whether or not this is a like an already known problem.

I have seen the same thing installing with or without remote support, installing back end role only or both back end and front end roles.

If preferred I'll create a new bug report for this problem, but it sounded sufficiently similar to the original problem to warrant posting my report here.

I went back and tried an advanced install, selected primary back end role, entered mysql root password and this time the install completed. I don't know if it makes a difference. This system doesn't have any tuner cards. I was originally trying to install on it because I couldn't (due to other bugs) install on the system with the tuner card.

To answer the question about whether I installed from the official release CD, does this help?

I did encountered the same kind of problem. Apparently I have to start the live CD version first then the installer, as I'm unable to finish the installation if called from the CD boot menu. Also, I have to leave the default network name unchanged. In other case the setup will not finish the job, as well.

This should be fixed in the latest 8.10 builds with the refreshed workflow. If it comes back up, please open a new bug.
